Lighting Africa is part of the World Bank Group’s contribution to Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll). The design, structuring, and implementation of an energy inclusion facility. The Facility will be focused on providing senior and mezzanine debt financing to small scale projects (on-grid, mini-grid and off-grid) with total costs less than USD 30 million and to distributed energy companies and other entities focused on off-grid energy solutions. The Facility will seek, through a stream-lined platform, to alleviate the barrier of high transaction costs faced by small scale projects and increase the flow of capital to the energy sector.
Established in 2007 by the European Commission and European Union Member States, the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund (EU-AITF) has since made a significant contribution to increase investment in infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The ECOWAS Renewable Energy Facility (EREF) is a grant facility which is managed by the Secretariat of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) based in Praia, Cape Verde. It provides grant co-funding for small to medium sized renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE) projects and businesses in rural and peri-urban areas. The Facility undertakes regular demand driven call for proposals.
The new Electrification Financing Initiative (ElectriFI) aims to accelerate access to (rural) energy in developing countries by boosting private sector to yield business opportunities. Past efforts supporting rural electrification were predominantly grant-based and therefore not generating a leverage that would allow reaching the ambitious policy objectives, whilst the sustainability of projects was not optimal.
The objective of the Electricity Access and Service Expansion Project for Congo, Democratic Republic of is to expand access to electricity in target areas. There are three components to the project, the first component being network upgrades and access expansion in selected SNEL service areas. Component one is aimed at increasing and improving access by addressing critical rehabilitation needs in the SNEL-operated distribution network zones where
Climate Investor One (CIO) is a blended finance facility. The first component of this programme is a development fund, which provides loans in the early stage of a project life cycle. The second component, a construction equity fund, will meet up to 75 percent of total construction costs in tandem with the project sponsor. Compared with conventional project financing, CIO removes the need for complex multi-party financing structures, with the potential to thereby reduce the time and cost associated with delivering renewable energy projects.
The Access to Energy Fund (AEF) is a fund managed by the Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO) on behalf of the Dutch government that supports private sector projects aimed at providing longterm access to energy services. The fund supports energy generation, transmission and distribution projects in developing countries and focuses on sustainable energy solutions. Our main fossil fuel sources – oil, coal and gas – are finite natural resources, and we are depleting them at a rapid rate. Climate change has become a reality and is changing our future.
